Chapter Eighteen

Molly loved her grandmother to pieces but she had to quit saying stuff like that. “I know you believe in Fate and all that, but—”

“It’s not only Fate, sweetheart. It’s common sense.”

“You’re kidding, right?” She glanced over at Bret, who rolled his eyes.

“I saw that look. You think I’m crazy as a bedbug.”

“I don’t think you’re crazy, Grammy. You just have unrealistic expectations.”

“There’s nothing unrealistic about it. I’m not counting on some New Age mystical force to bring you together. That might have happened last night when you fell in love with that tree, but I’m talking about cold, hard facts.”

“Like what?”

“I’ve known you all your life. I’ve known him ever since he was old enough to get a library card.”

“I don’t see what that has to do with—”

“Hear me out. I know your mother like the back of my hand. She’s been married to your dad for twenty-nine years, so I know him pretty darn well, too. Bret’s family isn’t as familiar as my own, but we’ve lived in the same town and had a friendly relationship since before he was born.”

“And?”

“When I say you and Bret would get along like grits and gravy, I have a solid basis for making that claim.”

“Because you know both families?”

“Yes, ma’am. You grew up in different parts of the country, but you share a set of values. You were each raised with love. You know how to love another person.”

Bret waded in. “Even if that’s true, we haven’t had time to find that out. Won’t have time. It takes months. Years.”

“He’s right, Grammy.”

Her grandmother smiled. “If you say so.” She stood. “I promise not to bring it up again. How about some Christmas cookies and coffee while we put on the ornaments?”

“Love some,” Bret said. “Mom always brings out Christmas cookies when we decorate the tree.”

“Mine, too.” Molly gave him a startled glance. Then she shrugged. “I’m sure lots of families do that.” Grammy had messed with her head. Now she’d be seeing similarities every time she turned around.
